Genealogy DNA Test

Genealogy Dna

Genealogy DNA test is a process by which a person's family history is studied. Genealogy, the term refers to the investigation or study of the family history or ancestry. This practice has been in existence from times immemorial.

The Genealogical information or the information about the family was usually passed on from one generation to another orally and later it was written down. It was specially done to maintain the ancestral records of the rulers and the nobles.

Connection The Dots

Nowadays Genealogy DNA test has emerged as a technique that has proved to be very influential in the field of genealogy. The technique has become possible due to the fact that the DNA from the earliest ancestors, passed down to the present generation is relatively unchanged. A genealogy DNA test is able to estimate the relation between two people.

The Molecular Genealogy Research Project

Another significant development in the area of Genealogy DNA test has been the development of the Molecular Genealogy Research Project. It is a combination of various genetic test results that are used to match the descendants of a direct ancestor. It can also be used to trace the migratory patterns of human beings and to determine their origins both, ethnic and biographical.

A Slight Hitch...

There is a little hitch, these tests do not have 100 % accuracy. Due to this fact, the exact generation in the family tree can not be proved accurately. However, it is possible to compare two profiles to calculate the time till their most recent ancestor lived. Although the technique is derived from the field of anthropological science, it has some margin of an error, due to which its efficiency in the field of family history study is reduced.

There are two main techniques used in a Genealogy DNA test- the first one is to map polymorphisms on the Y chromosome in order to trace the paternal line and on the mitochondrial to trace the maternal lines. The problem encountered in both the methods here is that they can only trace the two genetic lines on a family tree and the branches in those genetic lines double with every preceding generation.

For an instance, the Y chromosome tracing can easily connect a man to his father but not to his mother. Moreover, it can only connect him to one of his four grandparents i.e. his paternal grandfather.

All the problems withstanding, Genealogy DNA test has proved to be very popular. In fact it has now become very easy for a person with enough financial support, to trace his/her ancestry and find out his/her family history.
